I love to eat... I will probably use this "comment" on my eating experience. I would appreciate any and all foodies to contribute also.
Five to six times a year I go out with a few of my foodie buddies...
We've gone to steak houses such as:Mastro's, The Arroyo Chop House, The Stinkin' Rose, Lawry's Prime Rib, Flemings, Ocean Grill Newport Beach, and 555 Grill...
Mastro's was voted number one with their signature 32oz Spencer Steak the ultimate winner...
I've also eaten at Morton's, Ruth Chris, both Hitching Posts, Jocko's, AJ Spurs, McClintock's, and Tsurahashi's... and of course the regular chains that everybody goes to... My pick for the expensive end steak and over all best is Mastro's hands down... the atmosphere and service was the best... the sides: Macaroni and cheese(ask to add bacon), Mastro's signature mashed potatoes(not the lobster), chop salad, and their signature pound cake(voted the best dessert by all of us)was completely satisfying... with the sound of Sinatra, and Dean in the background and later on live music... it was great. I've gone four or five times and the food and service is always the best... If your going to spend a weeks pay check on dinner, you got to try this place... My kids also say this is the best place for dinner... Mastro's, Costa Mesa off of Anton Place across from South Coast Plaza... Oh don't bother with the "signature" fresh fish cocktail towers... you can ooooh and aaaaaah from afar... spend it on the sides and a fruity martini...
My buddies have gone by ourselves to Santa Maria to try the steaks there... I am proud to say that I am the only one that has tried them all... since I started out eating only filet mignon... changing to rib eye in order to compare with the other steaks was a challenge since rib eye is a tougher piece of meat and I like soft... not chewy... but all my buddies love rib eye so I decided to go that route... and since Mastro's converted me to eating ribeye(which is still the best cut of meat whether ribeye or filet)
Our picks for the best Santa Maria steaks varied...
Overall value: AJ Spurs, McClintocks tie... all the trimmings included was awsome... I loved the rootbeer float for desert at AJ Spurs and the Onion rings at McClintocks...
Best steak: 12oz. ribeye at the Hitching Post, Casmalia... the steak was too small... it was the only place went home wanting more... I wanted to eat another piece for dessert...
The others picked Jocko's as their favorite place.
We all decided to take our other buddy to eat at Lawry's and Mastro's since Norms is the only place he has eaten...
We'll see if his palate is ready for a 50 dollar steak as opposed to a 7 dollar T-bone with all the trimmings served all day!
I love the food channel... Guy's Big Bite, Food Challenge, Throwdown with Bobby Flay, Iron Chef, and Mission Impossible are the ones I Tivo... I haven't watched regular t.v. since I bought a new LCD t.v. and a sound system with 7 (yes, 7) speakers surrounding me... great for HD sporting events especially football, basketball, and baseball...
But I will watch the food challenge over a football game any day... I will watch Guy over the Lakers(ouch)... It really surprise myself because I never thought that I would spend more time watching the food channel programs than sports... DVR changed the way I watch shows... now I look at the "list" that has already been recorded and I will watch that instead of "live" broadcasts... I don't watch commercials anymore! I don't understand why my son Matt would rather watch his Laker games live... I would rather watch it an hour later in order to fast forward through the commercials..."It's because I like seeing it live"...
whatever...
I'm thinking I am not using my sound system to it's full ultimate capacity if all I watch is the food channel... but all the food looks so good in HD! When Guy chomps down on that greasy burger... oh my... I am drooling all over myself... we need aromavision...
Food channel allows me to indulge without the calories...
Smell the coffee.
I just finished watching a Jdrama I bought online... it's a pirated version that has English subtitles on it...my all time favorite is the day time classic "Churasan" about a country girl from Okinawa that goes to the big city and converts all those civilized secluded city folks into friendly Okinawan's... that was my first jdrama that I watched religiously back in the early 2000's when I was a stay at home dad... I got hooked on a Jdrama blog and talked all day with other Jdrama fanatics... we laughed and cried at all the different dramas that were on channel 18 and channel 22(12)... after going back to school to get a teaching credential I no longer had the time to watch any Jdramas... but the beginning of this year I went online and wanted to locate and buy "Churasan" and watch it from the beginning, since I never saw the beginning of that Jdrama... the original had 152 15 minute segments... the box set was 400 dollars and not subtitled... I finally found a site that sold it for 15 dollars a dvd... and with subtitles... not knowing what to expect I ordered one and found it to be a copy... but it was a great copy so I bought all of them...
Nancy and I began to watch a couple of drama's a day... it was a wonderful treat to watch something so wholsome and "cute"... it was a feel good show that made you forget about the stresses of the work day... and was just what the doctor ordered... well after that I got on an obsessive trip of finding more drama's I wanted to see again and others with actors and actresses I liked... after a while my collection grew... since I could get a jdrama that had 11 one hour episodes for 15 bucks it was worth it... better yet I could buy three and get one free... and free shipping... so now I watch jdrama's and cooking shows... that's about it... although I record sports if Tiger is winning I will watch... but with no teams in L.A. that have won anything... I don't watch it...
I just finished one about a housewife who was treated like a servant by her family and when the husband had an affair she snapped and decided to get a divorce... the actress who played the mom was really good... it made you think of how tough it is to be a mom in Japan... I think there are a lot of husbands that are like that too... it made me think if I was like that...
I'm also watching another jdrama that is about a foodie who becomes an apprentice with the mean chef who is brilliant... there is a love story and other creative elements that make this drama a wonderful story... I think I like these dramas because there is no love making and cussing... just innocent admiration and inferences throughout... and usually by the end of the drama the boy and girl finally kiss... after ten to eleven episodes!
Ahhhhhhh to be innocent again. It's like watching Doris Day and Rock Hudson all over again...
Evasia has been watching them herself and found a site that you can watch jdramas(http://www.mysoju.com/) for free...
Time to watch my dramas... sayonara
